Loving Hut

After a long walk in the morning, I came across Loving Hut restaurant in San Francisco’s Chinatown. It was a cloudy day so a bowl of hot chowder hit the spot. Everything on the menu is vegan, which was a bonus!

Sunflower Cafe

I became a frequent visitor here during my summer stay in San Francisco. Loved their lemongrass tofu and vermicelli noodles. I had to recently fill my Vietnamese food cravings just from looking at these photos.

Holy Gelato is a cute gelato shop in Inner Sunset area of San Francisco. The shop is filled with old school lunch boxes and open late. It not only has yummy gelato, but so many vegan gelato flavors to try!

I went out to lunch with a friend who had a craving for Vietnamese while in San Francisco at Hai Ky Mi Gia. They are known for their braised duck leg and noodles. Fortunately they were nice and made me a veg-friendly option of rice noodles with pickled carrots, daikon and cucumbers, topped with bean sprouts which turned out to be pretty tasty. They are also known for their yummy homemade warm soy milk.

Pepples Donut’s is one of my favorite treats in San Francisco. All their donuts are 100% organic and vegan ingredients from their flour, fruit glazes and to their cocoa. It was hard to stay away from the Ferry Building and now that I’m gone, I wish they were in Chicago!

I happened to walk by Tartine Bakery in San Francisco on my way home and I couldn’t help myself and stopped by. The line out the door seemed reasonable (there’s always a line out of the door) and lucky for me, it was 5pm when the fresh bread comes out. I got my hands on a fresh warm loaf filled with poppy and sesame seeds. Bread right out of the oven always hits the spot.

Dan Susman and Andrew Monbouquette made a documentary called “Growing Cities.” These two young filmmakers visit different urban city farms and try to understand issues with the way we and cities are growing to the divide it also creates us from our food. During one visit, they visit Free Farm in San Francisco, which produced two-and-a-half tons of food in the past year for the neighborhood’s poorest citizens. It’s an inspiring message that teaches the value of growing food that doesn’t have to cost a penny. Look forward to seeing the film when it is released!

Renegade Craft Fair

Looking forward to this event all summer, especially because my talented cousin will be selling his amazing and unique screen printed pillows and artwork. If you can’t make it, check out his online store.

Figs are in season from what I was told last week and I kept my eye out for them. To my excitement, they are arrived fresh and organic at the farmer’s market nearby yesterday. I’ve only had a fresh fig once in my life and now will be my second time. The first time, they were flown in from Californians who are devoted fig eaters. Thanks Kevin and Deborah!
Just last week, I recently read an article from the New York Times on how to grill them. Excited to try a modified version of this recipe.

PUBLIC Bikes is celebrating their One-Year Anniversary on Saturday, July 9 from 11a-3p at their 123 South Park Office in San Francisco. They also have a photo contest with some great prizes.

I checked out their office during an open house and it’s a very cool and fun space filled with dedicated staff that really believe in what they do. Their commuter bikes come in all different colors and most importantly look like a joy to ride. I remember attending my first design conference in 2006 and the founder, Rob Forbes, who also founded Design Within Reach, spoke and made me excited about what you can do with design.

Enjoyed a bowl of Hapa Ramen noodles at the Ferry Building. They were out of veggie broth so I settled on cold noodles and with vegetables. It was $8 a bowl, but recommend it with the broth! They source their ingredients locally and also have a food truck so many more chances to find them.

The weather this weekend was filled with gorgeous sunshine and blue skies, especially in San Francisco. Today, I discovered a new trail entrance to Mount Sutro Open Reserve. It’s great to live in a city and have access to extremely tall trees and winding trails. It also makes me appreciate how much the natural landscape makes a city even more beautiful and I didn’t have to drive somewhere at all to enjoy it.
