Fresh Movie →
Just last Friday, I showed the documentary “FRESH” at school and ordered lunch from Whole Foods. It was a nice way to introduce how and where our food comes from as well as current issues and people that are tackling it and making big impacts. I recommend ordering the film to show with friends, family and community members or checking out screenings near you! Here’s the...

Buy Locally, Connect Locally I created this video in my introduction to digital media class that showcased a mobile application to encourage people to buy locally via points in the community. It won Honorable Mention in the IDEO’s Climate Change Video Challenge this summer. The project was challenging, but worth it to know people value the concept. Buy local!

I just came across this interactive recipe blog on The New York Times website, which celebrates Thanksgiving with vegetarian and vegan dishes from some favorite chefs and cookbook authors. Find all the recipes from Well’s Vegetarian Thanksgiving series or go to the Well blog to learn more about the series. New gorgeous photos of the dishes will be added daily until Thanksgiving Day! persimmons
Why persimmons? Well really, I enjoy eating this fruit. It blooms beautiful flowers and eaten like a very sweet ripe juicy pear. I also love the word…it almost sounds like ‘person’ if you say it fast and even better when you add the word ‘sweet’ ~ sweet person. The word came to me when I decided to start writing about food because it’s my dad’s favorite...

New animal welfare rating system to roll out at... →
Whole Foods is piloting a new humane-animal welfare rating system in some of their stores and will introduce it nationally in the new year. It was developed by Global Animal Partnership to address concerns on the way animals are raised and slaughtered. It’s great news and gives more power to the consumer by providing information about their food - in particular how the animals were treated....

Local Lansing
This past weekend, we spent with family in Lansing, Michigan. I’ve started to explore some really cute areas and one was a newly built indoor city market near downtown. We enjoyed a vegan chocolate cookie and picked up some homemade organic peanut butter while listening to a live duo band perform. It’s small, yet inviting. It was a nice way to start the weekend and happy to see...

Sunday Vanilla Cake
It was a beautiful Sunday morning and with an extra hour to spare, I decided to bake a vanilla cake after making miso soup for breakfast. I used Peter Berley’s cake recipe from his Modern Vegetarian cookbook and added additional milk to make it extra moist. 1 1/3 c. unbleached all-purpose flour 2/3 c. whole wheat pastry flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp....

No-so Happy Meals →
On the day, McDonald’s brings back the McRib, San Francisco Board of Supervisors bans the Happy Meal to be sold in the city. They are taking a great stride by banning it because of the lack of nutritional quality targeted at children. The ordinance require meals to meet nutritional guidelines if they want to include a toy. I see this as a win towards the food revolution. This also means...

Food: Why We Waste So Much →
How much do we waste? Quite a lot more than we think. Food, especially fruits and vegetables get forgotten in the fridge and ends up in our trash and also our landfills. Buying what we can use and using what we buy is also about being more consistent in eating fruits and vegetables more often too. “The common attitude is ‘when in doubt, throw it out,’” author Jonathan Bloom of “American...

WatchWatch
Renegade Chef Ann Cooper I saw this video last year for a project as I was challenged to redefine dining design experience and I watched her again. She’s very memorable and her passion for her work shows. Chef Ann Cooper spoke at the 2007 EG conference in the video and to many, known as the “renegade lunch lady”. She talks about the coming revolution in the way kids eat at...
